Renova Foundation implemented, in August 2020, the Simplified Indemnity System, based on the decision of the 12th Federal Court. Focused on categories of difficult proof of damage, such as artisans, washerwomen, carters, sanders, subsistence, and informal fishermen – which were, so far, one of the main bottlenecks in the indemnity process – the new system registered, until January 2021, more than 5 thousand terms sent for approval, which can exceed R$ 400 million in payments.
The Simplified Indemnity System was implemented in August 2020 by the Renova Foundation following a decision by the Court in actions filed by Commissions of Affected People from impacted municipalities. The first payment made through the system was in September.
Just in January, more than 1 thousand homologation terms were sent to the Courts. Payment takes place within 10 working days after approving the term of acceptance by the Judiciary.
By the end of December 2020, more than 3.200 people had already received payments by the new Simplified Indemnity System, and the amount disbursed exceeded R$ 290 million.
“The percentages show the adherence to the system increases every day, such as the speed of payments. Between the end of October and the beginning of December, about 2 thousand acceptance terms were signed – an increase of 300% in just one month. In January, we have sent, so far, around 1 thousand acceptance terms for judicial approval, reaching 4.200 in total – practically doubling the number. Based on that, we can predict we will reach 5 thousand acceptance terms sent for approval at the end of January. The paid amount can exceed R$ 400 million”
Andre de Freitas, Director-President of Renova Foundation.
The cases of difficult proof include categories such as washerwomen, artisans, sanders, carter drivers, mineral extractors, subsistence, and informal fishermen, among others. The amounts of indemnities, defined by the Court, with a single and definitive settlement, vary from R$ 23 thousand to R$ 567 thousand, according to the damage category.
